On May 5th. 1845, the first train chuffed out of Guildford Station and changed Surrey’s ancient county town forever. The impact of the railway on the town was so great, that, by 1900, Guildford’s population had trebled and the town found itself at the centre of a busy rail network, which became one of the most important railway junctions in Southern England.
